Celebrating more than 270 years of producing one of the world’s most beloved champagnes, Moët & Chandon represents all that is elegant and luxurious. The annual harvesting of wine grapes, also known as vintage, is one of the most crucial steps in the process of champagne making. Many factors play a role in ensuring a successful harvest. Moreover, keeping the grapes at the right temperature during each part of the process is of critical importance to achieve the highest quality required for Moët & Chandon’s end product. It goes without saying that this phase in making the impressive sparkling beverage requires an equally impressive amount of uninterrupted energy. For over a decade now, Energyst has proudly provided a tailor-made power and temperature control solution during the harvest. Recently, the contract was extended for yet another three years.
One can imagine that we have a name to uphold with our champagne. So our standards are extremely high, and we expect nothing less from our partners”, says Luc Thiebault, Service & Maintenance Manager Fluids at Moët & Chandon. “After being picked, the grapes are transported, in crates, to the wine pressing centres where they are pressed into the basis of the wine. This product is then stored into massive vats to initialise the first out of two fermentation processes. Since we are on a tight schedule, these steps are in need of a serious amount of highly dependable back-up power in case the commercial grid fails. As well as powerful chillers for cooling and hot water systems for heating.” The hot water systems are used for cleaning the wine crates, while the chillers help cooling down the grape juice during the processing of the grapes. Thiebault: “Due to the seasonality of the harvest, we decided to rely on Energyst’s renowned temporary rental solutions, instead of acquiring equipment ourselves that we would only use one month a year. A very fruitful decision, to say the least!”
Philippe Van den Eynde, commercial liaison for Moët & Chandon at Energyst, explains: “Moët & Chandon expects operational excellence from our team of technicians. So in the two weeks before every harvest, we meticulously deploy the required power generators, transformers, chillers, fuel tanks and additional equipment at their seven operation sites. Everything has to be installed in its right place. The slightest anomaly may cause costly downtime or, even worse, make parts of the harvest useless.” Ten years in the making, the installation procedure has been streamlined to perfection. As is all communication with Service & Maintenance Manager Fluids Luc Thiebault. Since Energyst is always looking for new ways to improve services and products, our team recently launched an innovative online monitoring tool designed for the various chillers.
“The technicians at Moët & Chandon now have insight in how the machines are functioning; real-time, using their smartphones”, Rob Munsters, Application Manager Benelux at Energyst, adds. “In case of a malfunction, they can respond immediately with a quick fix. Or get in touch with one of our service professionals, available 24/7. Energyst has access to highly skilled engineers that can deliver all services necessary on site. We do so by fully utilizing our international partner network mixed with in-house resources. Having documented our installation procedure with care, we are also able to work more efficiently every year. This gives our team the opportunity to do what they do best: deploy a dependable turnkey solution. Making Energyst a unique ‘on stop shop’ for power and temperature control.”

For both partners to really bring out the best in each other, timing is as important as technicalities. The harvest takes place at different sites. So different facilities have to be active at different moments in time. Luc Thiebault: “Luckily, Energyst excels in understanding our needs and adapting to our planning. Energyst isn’t just our partner, but an essential part of our team. Their personal commitment really makes the difference.” Philippe Van den Eynde adds: “For us, Moët & Chandon is a textbook example of a loyal client that upholds the same high standards as we do. We speak the same language, making them a customer right up our alley. We are looking forward to further strengthening the bond with Moët & Chandon and extending our essential role in the production of their fine champagnes.”
