Real Energy: a customized power rental solution

Equinor will start a new oil field in the Barents Sea in 2023. This field is called Johan Castberg and covers the oil discoveries of Skrugard, Havis and Drivis. Johan Castberg will consist of an extensive seabed field and an anchored production ship – a so-called FPSO. The project is of great importance for further development of oil extraction in the Barents Sea.

The production ship is manufactured in Singapore, and thus faces a month-long voyage back to Stord, Norway. Energyst was challenged to design a temporary power solution for Johan Castberg FPSO during this voyage.

Meet the customer’s needs with a custom-designed solution

The clients Equinor and Sembcorp required a solution that is not found in any standard power package.

The contract includes high requirements on technical documentation and specifications for all equipment. All components must be robust enough to withstand both the tropical heat of Singapore and the extreme weather of the North Sea, as well as the challenging voyage to Stord. In addition, equipment has to include fire and gas detection and an automatic self-extinguishing fire system.

To meet customer needs, Energyst has designed and custom-built multiple units, including a switchgear and a high-voltage transformer. The solution is build in Norway and transported to Singapore by a container ship.

Lots of power in a small footprint

Energyst’s solution delivers three megawatts of power via two 1700 KVA generators that supply a 4000 amp custom-built switchgear that goes to an 11 kilovolt high-voltage transformer. This power is distributed to a number of consumers on the ship.

The generators are unique when it comes to capacity versus footprint; the power package is provided in two 20-foot containers. The total solution is limited to six containers, including an external 20,000L diesel tank.

This application ensures a power package for Johan Castberg FPSO which is optimized for an operating environment with a very high power requirement and correspondingly limited space.
