Also, it’s one of the most technologically advanced, energy-efficient facilities in the world. The refinery produces over 1.8 million tonnes of alumina per year, a fine white powder that is exported to aluminium smelters for processing into metal. But this enormous production nearly grinded to a halt, because of a damaged power cable…
The high concentration of iron compounds in the bauxite gives the by-product its characteristic red colour and the name ‘Red Mud’. This must be washed and the residue contained in a Bauxite Residue Disposal Area (BRDA). When a 3300 volt cable supplying the mud disposal system at the facility was damaged, our customer needed a solution fast. One that would keep the mud disposal operation for the BRDA up and running, to avoid production downtime at the facility.
Paul Turley, Key Account Manager at Energyst: “However, what should have been a straightforward one-week project turned into a six-week nightmare when disaster struck. The replacement cable had a manufacturing fault, and had to be pulled out and a second replacement put into place. While our customer’s work on the cable continued, a blocked filter in the generator due to dirty fuel also threatened production. Determined not to be defeated, we made an emergency call to our local service engineer at 3.00 am. He went straight out to the facility and was able to solve the problem immediately.
